The Sunbeam Tiger gained popularity in the 1960s for its combination of British styling and American V8 power. Developed by Carroll Shelby under a contract with the Rootes Group, the Tiger was essentially a high-performance version of the Sunbeam Alpine, featuring a Ford V8 engine and modifications to the chassis.
Engine: The Tiger was primarily powered by a Ford V8 engine, with the first Series (1964-1967) using a 260 cu in (4.3 L) V8, and the later Series II (1967) using a 289 cu in V8.
Chassis Modifications: The Tiger’s chassis was modified to accommodate the larger V8 engine, including a switch to rack-and-pinion steering and minor suspension tweaks.
Performance: Despite the added weight of the V8, the Tiger was a powerful and sporty car, reaching 0-60 mph in around 7.8 seconds and achieving a top speed of 124 mph.
Carroll Shelby played a key role in the Tiger’s development, particularly in the prototype stage and in refining the car for production.
A total of around 7,000 Tigers were produced between 1964 and 1967. The Tiger continues to be a sought-after classic, often considered a less expensive alternative to the Shelby Cobra.
