The TCR specification was conceived in 2014 by former World Touring Car Championship manager Marcello Lotti. TCR is a global touring car specification allowing production-based race cars to compete in worldwide championships. All cars are front-wheel drive powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine based on production vehicles retaining the suspension layout but with upgrades for racing such as brakes and aerodynamics.
In 2018 the DSG Challenge was introduced as a separate competition in the TCR class in Europe and later in 2019 SRO America followed suit, to promote the DSG equipped cars.

DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) is a type of dual-clutch automatic transmission commonly found in road and race cars, offering fast and smooth gear changes.

Engineered for the rigors of international touring car racing, the VW Golf GTI TCR is a factory-built race car that retains the DNA of the production GTI while delivering the performance and handling demanded by racing professionals.

The VW Golf GTI TCR retains its five-door GTI appearance but is considerably wider than the series production GTI with the aerodynamically enhanced Volkswagen Motorsports body kit comprised of flared fenders with side vents designed to accommodate the wider racing wheels and tires, an adjustable rear wing, a new hood, revised front bumper, a front splitter and side skirts.

The interior is stripped-down with no sound deadening or unnecessary trim, the dashboard retains the essential design of the production model but with an AIM digital dash and datalogger installed. A hydraulic, mechanical locking rear axle rally-style handbrake is mounted to the center tunnel and is located next to the steering wheel. The steering wheel is fitted with a carbon fiber control panel. The production DSG gear selector is retained. It is equipped with a FIA compliant roll cage, an OMP fire system, three built in air jacks, OMP racing seat for both driver and passenger fitted with Scroth harnesses. The diamond plate construction pedal box incorporates a footrest, tilton hydraulic brake pedal and OEM throttle pedal.

Power is delivered from the Volkswagen EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four, tuned to give 350 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 310 ft lbs. of torque at 2500 rpm. Weighing 2833 lbs., the VW Golf GTI TCR complies with the TCR series regulations and delivers an impressive power-to-weight ratio.
