Description
This Audi GT3 R8 LMS Ultra is the very last 2014 GT3 chassis sold by Audi Sport. After starting life as a Grand Am spec. R8 LMS GT3 the chassis was replaced by a team in California. Shortly after, it was purchased by Autometrics Motorsports in Summerville SC, where they rebuilt the transmission, it has only accumulated approximately 4,000 km since.
The Audi R8 LMS Ultra is a GT3 race car built for endurance events and customer teams, marking the last update to the first-generation R8 GT3 before the new model debuted in 2015.
Coming off the success of 115 race wins and 12 national and international titles over the course of three seasons of competition, Audi customer racing replaced the R8 LMS GT3 in 2012 with the launch of the much-improved R8 LMS Ultra.
The Audi R8 LMS Ultra was a dominant force in major events like the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, it was a two-time winner of the Spa 24 Hours plus class wins at Daytona and Petit Le Mans. It also competed successfully in various other series including the Blancpain Sprint Series, ADAC GT Masters and the 2014 Audi R8 LMS Cup running at Fuji Speedway, Sepang, and Shanghai.
It was the leading GT3 model from 2013 to 2015, prior to the introduction of the new 2015 model.
The development of the R8 LMS Ultra was largely driven by feedback received from the customer racing teams.
A new exhaust system was equipped with race catalytic converters. The mid mounted 5.2-liter V10 engine produced higher torque at lower engine speeds, delivering a power output of up to 570 hp, depending on BOP regulations.
Audi updated the transmission for endurance.
They enhanced its cooling package by incorporating a larger engine oil cooler and an upgraded transmission-fluid cooler. The hydraulic steering oil cooler was relocated from the front of the vehicle to the mid-section. Larger side air vents optimized airflow to the cooling system, while modifications also increased air supply to the front radiator and improved interior ventilation.
The R8 LMS Ultra also received several chassis improvements, such as enhanced front brake cooling, uniball joints in the transverse control arms, and Bilstein gas dampers.
It had new carbon fiber doors in combination with high-energy-absorbing crash foam both reducing the overall weight of the car and providing increased safety. The new PS1 safety seat developed by Audi became standard equipment.
Aerodynamic enhancements further support the updates introduced for 2012. The wider front hood featuring optional louvers, were subject to homologation regulations for specific racing series. The redesigned wider rear wing incorporating larger end plates. Extensive testing in the Audi wind tunnel resulted in a more effective wing position, maximizing downforce while reducing aerodynamic drag. Additionally, a newly engineered front plate with improved diffusion beneath the front end improved aerodynamic balance.
